If you do a little research, you can find gems like the "Friendship" Boat. Most cruises through Milford Sound take about 60 people and are frequently loaded with young tour groups who manage to go through the entire liquor stock (like the big boat behind the "Friendship"). We went on an overnight cruise on the Friendship with only nine other people and enjoyed lovely meals, fantastic scenery and great kayaking. Highly recommended.
